Review of The Huntsman: Winter's War (2016) by Ferdi A — 20 Aug 2016
It's been brazenly labelled as the "unwanted" & "unnecessary" follow-up movie to 2012's Snow White. But how does that define and/or determine whether a film is good or bad in its own right? Besides, isn't it the trend in Hollywood to keep churning out unwanted sequels/prequels? That would mean a third of all movies pumped out these days are terrible, right? As it seems strangely unfair critics are only taking issue with this & not every other over-milked cash-cow franchise.
Also to be fair; not every make-believe themed fantasy has to be jam-packed with mythical creatures & disaster-porn-carnage or as brooding & ominous as GOT or a religious/political statement like the majority of superhero films made these days.
The visuals are stunning, it's a shit load funnier than 'Snow White' (thanks to the dwarfs) & has a unique feminist edge (which you'd think would be welcomed in this modern age). This movie is packed with a stellar cast & clichéd male hero, yet it's the female "villains" who steal the show.
Blunt further excels on her stern rigid vulnerability talents we saw in 'Edge of Tomorrow' & 'Sicario' and Theron takes her gorgeous & shamelessly evil Ravenna to new divine heights.
I loved it. It's gothic, dazzling, magical & isn't just a typical prequel or sequel, it's bloody both!
