Review of The Hunt for Red October (1990) by Xgary X — 12 Jan 2011
My younger brother's favourite movie; he never really did outgrow his "military fascination" phase. This film is vividly realised, with the techno-babble that defines Clancy's narratives stripped bare, techno-thrills and political tension the focus.
Sean Connery, disregard for a proper Russian accent aside, gives a remarkably understated performance, Sam Neill also brilliant as his right-hand man. Alec Baldwin, at this point in his career, defined the nerdy action hero.
Jack Ryan has always been more comfortable with books than in the thick of the action, and Baldwin conveys this perfectly. Roy Scheider as the USS Dallas Captain and James Earl Jones as the CIA vice-admiral lend gravitas to the suspenseful proceedings.
