Review of The Hunt for Red October (1990) by Jobin B — 08 Nov 2011
Starring Sean Connery as Captain Marko Ramius and Alec Baldwin as Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan The Hunt for Red October is the swang song for cold war movies. A thinking man's James Bond; this is one of the smartest action films to ever come out of Hollywood.
With a zest for detail director John McTiernan expertly builds tension upon each submarine and makes a moderately good book into an outstanding and superbly crafted political thriller. It is a masterpiece of storytelling that shows once more McTiernan was one of the best action movie directors of all time.
However, the films main asset is its incredible cast led by Baldwin in what is and will be his greatest role. Connery is magnificent and dominates the screen, despite playing a Russian with a Scottish accent.
The Hunt for Red October is a truly great and underrated movie that does more than just stay afloat!
