It's a submarine war movie so of course it's awesome. Sean Connery does a good job convincing us that Scottish people can be German. He doesn't do a good job conniving us he's a bad guy.
He's too charming to be evil, and he's not really a bad guy anyway. That's what I like about it. It's an action movie from 1990 and the bad guy isn't all bad and the good guy plays a smart role instead of just kicking ass and saying one-liners.
Alec Baldwin doesn't stand out as an action star, much to the films benefit.
