Review of The Hunt (2013) by Kevin C — 05 Apr 2013
Superb Danish film exploring pedophilia accusations, mob-hysteria; and a revenge thriller.
A superb set-up where we get to know a likeable teacher and family man. Then the initial shock is that it's his word against the child's, and everyone chooses to believe the child. With the angelisation of children in modern society this is a powerful narrative. Then the build-up of hysteria as a community flies into a frenzy of self-righteousness, without holding a shred of evidence against him. Once again in an era of trial by twitter 'he who is without sin' springs to mind.
The acting bar one dodgy stick-on beard is exemplary. It all builds to horrible confrontations in the supermarket and the church. And when he meets the girl again at the end, the hairs on the back of your neck will be standing up. A real return to form.
