Review of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 (2015) by Matty M — 09 Mar 2016
By the time Mockingjay, Part 2 (2015) rolls around, the entire Hunger Games film franchise becomes a tedious exercise in dreariness with even the actors looking as bored and checked-out as the viewers.
The first hour and 45 minutes of this film is such an absolute slough that I found myself distracted by continuity errors related to the style/length of Jennifer Lawrence's hair (watch its random metamorphosis from overly long, curly and lush to a more practical straight but still long length to a pulled up braid that seems lacking in the the necessary quantity in previous scenes, then back again or vice versa this way or that.
.. when does she find time to do her hair during the revolution in Panem?). The payoff during the last 15-20 minutes feels completely unearned for too many reasons to enumerate in detail here (not enough time with supporting characters, poor acting, seriously flawed casting choices, wasted talent see Natalie Dormer, etc.
). It was a massive creative mistake to split the last book of the trilogy into two films as there is simply not enough material to carry the weight of an additional film so we're left with a series of over-earnest close-ups of a conflicted Katniss and empty dialogue/acting (e.
G. Hollywood money-grabbing at its worst). I suppose we'll have to wait 20 years now for someone else to attempt a better adaption of these books. Hopefully, they won't fall into the 'first person' trap (or pure laziness) of this film franchise.
Grade: C-.
