Review of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) by Cj S — 20 Dec 2014
The second of THE HUNGER GAMES movies, CATCHING FIRE, dips from the very same pool as its predecessor, yet comes across as far more shallow. This time the slight difference that distinguishes the two is that CATCHING FIRE actually feels like the equivalent of a SURVIVOR ALL-STARS season, nothing more, nothing less until the very end.
And even at that, it threatens to fizzle about half way through. Overall, the film feels more forced, less inspired & lacking in energy. The competition itself seems tired and hokey (even the film's look is somewhat tacky) and this despite the large stakes of the event.
I wasn't remotely thrilled by CATCHING FIRE for the most of its length, a tedious close to two hours and thirty minutes, but its very ending did capture my attention and has now incited me to continue my loyalty to the series.
Perhaps that was in fact the studio's intentions, after all. It seems to have worked.
