Review of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) by Alasdair B — 24 Aug 2014
Although I appaled the second books simple writing style that a 5th grader could read, "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" is a tremendous improvement. The first film felt shallow and simple, this one felt dark, complicated, emotional, and stirring.
The first major improvement is the acting. Everyone did much better this time around (except Harrelson he was always great and continues too be). Lawrence was good, and even Hutcherson did much better.
The cinematography is much, much better. No more shaky cam! Obviously a new DP must have filmed this one.
At its core is a terrifying government abusing its power and abusing the people. Katniss and the Mockingjay have become a symbol of hope for the districts. Its decently directed, well acted, well shot, and has emotional power.
