Review of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) by Rastaman J — 30 Dec 2014
Suzanne Collins managed to write a follow-up to her blockbuster first book that is nearly as good as the first. The film adaptation of the first book was quite good, though not quite a good as the book and the same is true of this sequel.
The film follows the book closely with only minor changes, though this film seemed to have a lot more action than the first film. The only strong point of the first film that is true here too is the strong performance by Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen.
Lawrence takes her role just as seriously as she would a part in a David O. Russell film (I just watched "American Hustle" two days ago) and it really gives this film some depth that I doubt most young actresses would bring to the role.
Philip Seymour Hoffman is a welcome addition to the already strong supporting cast as Plutarch Heavensbee. Jeffrey Wright and Amanda Plummer were also perfectly cast as Beetee and Wiress. Jena Malone also stands out as Johanna, who I don't really remember in much outside of "Mrs.
Doubtfire." Overall, a worthy sequel that's as more action packed than the first, but makes up for the lack of story by still staying true to the characters.
