Review of The Hunger (1983) by Alyssa N — 23 Dec 2008
Style over substance isn't always a bad thing if the director is willing to embrace it, but this erotic horror film takes itself way too seriously. It seems there's a lot it wants to say, but any potential message gets lost among the bad music video-quality editing that confused me and forced me out of the movie more often than it drew me in.
There are also some promising plot points that are abandoned, and the poorly conceived story has so many holes I wouldn't know where to begin to critique it. On the positive side, it has hot lesbian vampire action, a cast to die for, and superb make-up effects, but that only makes it more frustrating to watch all that potential being wasted for ninety minutes, which feels even longer due to the unnecessary slow pacing.
Basically, this whole film is a mess.
