Review of The Hundred-Foot Journey (2014) by Andrew M — 19 Jan 2015

This really didn't know what it wanted to be, as it feels like two or three movie ideas fused into one. It wants to be about acceptance, and it wants to be about family, and ends up kind of muddled mash-up of the two.

It's well acted and certainly humourous at times, but the plot's fairly predictable while at the same time having characters do things counter to established traits, so some scenes felt very forced even if there's no surprise when the do happen.

I was also never sure which was the main plot -- the chef son wanting to be a good chef, or the conflict between Mirren and his father. I think it wanted to do both, but the result was neither felt fully developed.

Still, there is a charm to it, and while at just over 2 hours it felt too long, it's pleasant enough. I really do wish in a film about two restaurants there had been more FOOD though.
