Review of The Hundred-Foot Journey (2014) by Dennis A — 13 Jun 2015
Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg team up to produce this movie, based on the popular book. When they got Helen Mirren to agree to be in it, they knew they had a potential winner. Directed by Lasse Hallstrom, it is the story of an Indian family of restaurateurs who leave home hoping to find the right place to resettle.
They finally settle in a small town in the south of France, buy a former restaurant, and plan to introduce Indian cuisine to the locals. Things get complicated, as they are directly across the street, just a hundred feet from a very successful, Michelin one-star classic French restaurant, run strictly by Madame Mallory, played by Helen Mirren.
It is not long before competition leads to some underhanded tricks, which fuel racism and violence. This movie can boast a strong cast, led by the Indian actors playing the Kadam family, particularly the patriarch and his young genius son and culinary genius.
The village is gorgeous, and the "hundred-foot journey" represents that journey we must all make with our minds and hearts if our path in life is to have any meaning. This is a total gem of a movie that will touch your heart.
