Review of The Hundred-Foot Journey (2014) by Erin W — 23 Aug 2014
@The Hundred-Foot Journey: Art Director Approved.
Based on the novel by Richard C Morais, finding this film is like discovering a restaurant that you've never been to. With heavy-weight names like Oprah and Spielberg behind it, it has to be good. Set in the south of France, an Indian family moves in across the street from a stuffy restauranteur. A food fight breaks out when East meets West, a clash of culture and flavours. It's a tantalizing feast for the senses and the heart, peppered with humour and a dash of romance that simmers throughout.
Hassan Kadam, the culinary protégé is played Manish Dayal, a handsome South Asian leading man. This is a rare treat in Hollywood films but done to perfection. Papa steals the show. Helen Mirren is deliciously frosty dessert served cold. Yes, it's an English-speaking film without subtitles, but still rich with the authenticity of the French and Indian taste and language. Bravo!
"Food is memory." So my humble recommendation is to try this film du jour - an exquisite faire that will please anyone's palette. And don't see it hungry like me. Bon regarder!
