Review of The Human Stain (2003) by Tim M — 22 Jul 2008
It's true that most of this film's brilliance comes from the incredibly smart, poignant Roth novel. Still, this is a noble adaptation. Well-acted, and true to the book's thoughtful nature, The Human Stain explores the nuances of human failure--chiefly through the many ways in which circumstance and discrimination rule us.
The story attacks these issues from every angle, adding twists and turns just when you think you've got it all figured out. Also, whenever I am sad, I'll think of Gary Sinise and Anthony Hopkins' dance scene.
And I will inevitably smile.
