Review of The Human Centipede (First Sequence) (2009) by Tom P — 30 Dec 2011
Possibly the worst, most objectional and reprehensible film to have ever been released - it's made just for a reaction, with little care for actual filmic techniques; the premise is sickening, the gore quite tame for such an unwieldly idea, and the actual acting and plot - the bit filmgoers care about - is terrible.
Tom Six, the director, has put too much effort into creating an abhorrent idea, and not making a film about it; it seems rushed, the casting isn't brilliant and at times it's so strange it just seems laughable (I know that, apparantly, the film is supposed to be darkly comic in places, but I honestly believe that, at first release, it was meant to be deadly serious) and some of the dialogue just makes so little sense you become frustrated by it.
Scenes seem to just linger for too long, the sense of time-wasting evident, and, really, I did not enjoy a single moment of it - that is, however, not because of the premise, or the "entertaining" shots of the centipede itself, but simply because it is not a well-made film and I could just not get into it.
Various other films have been released with much more disturbing scenes (one that instantly comes to mind is the rape scene from "Last House on the Left") but I was positioned to actually feel something for those poor girls.
Entertainment, as a term, really seems to have taken a turn for the worse...
