I have strong respect for the Coen Brothers. They have consistently put out entertaining and thought-provoking work throughout their careers. However, I think they had their first flub with "The Hudsucker Proxy.".

The main problem I have with the film is the message. It's so blatantly obvious that the film is an allegory for capitalism that it becomes annoying to constantly hear from the characters how this is a film about capitalism. Not only that, but the characters speak in this fast-talking unnaturalistic tone that reminds me of the 1920's, not the 1950's.

But the film is centered on the writing. With so many quick phrases being thrown around, to catch everything in one sitting is an unreachable feat. In the moments I did catch though, I didn't find too much wit. Those moments seem to be a retread of a comedy routine that has been phased out of modern society because it's just not that funny.

"The Hudsucker Proxy" has been dubbed as a "throwback" to many films and genres. Indeed, the film reminded me a lot of Frank Capra's work, but in all honesty, I'd rather watch a Capra picture. "The Hudsucker Proxy" has this fantasy element that makes the entire viewing experience a little off and I couldn't get a strong grasp for the film because of it.

The style of the film is wondeful of course. The Coens always know what looks and sounds good. But the lack of content seems to overtake the strong style here. "The Hudsucker Proxy" looks like a Coen Brothers' film, but it certainly doesn't feel like one. The film is an overall disappointment.
