Review of The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) by Ellen W — 30 Jan 2010
The Coen Brothers are an acquired taste, and have major hits and major misses, their humour sometimes decidedly eclectic, and their preponderance for sudden, startling violence shocking and off-putting.
The Hudsucker Proxy is possibly their most delightful, accessible and funniest film. It's a satire on 50's consumerism with the frenetic pace of a farce, and performances to match. Tim Robbins does stunned simpleton well, and Jennifer Jason Leigh is simply stunning as fast-talking, bolshy news reporter, Amy Archer; she's evidently having a ball.
And so are we. Add a dash of the fantastical toward the end (humanity triumphing over soulless corporation) and the simple charm of the film being about such a nonsensical thing as a Hula Hoop, and you have a Coen winner, and maybe their best film.
