Review of The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) by Michael C — 18 May 2010
A blend of Capra, screwball, and even German expressionism, this is a brilliant homage to classic genre films that still stands on its own. Detailing a common man (Tim Robbins, delightfully over-the-top in this role) who invents the Hollywood and must learn the error of corporate mentality, the film is fun in that it is a feast for lover of these off-kilter types of comedies and is a fresh diversion from standard comedic fare.
I LOVE Jennifer Jason Leigh here, channeling Katharine Hepburn and Rosalind Russell at their screwball best. And of course Paul Newman, always reliable, makes a solid villain. I adore the Coens and this film reinforces that adoration.
