Review of The Howling (1981) by Gavin S — 19 Jun 2007
Along with An American Werewolf in London, this is the werewolf film that al werewolf fans must see. Director Joe Dante's delightful humor and clear affection for b-movies permeates just about every scene.
The cast is great and the dark humor is delightful. The werewolves look like something out of a nightmare fairy tale with tusk-like fangs and absolutely huge ears that resemble demonic horns. The transformation effects are excellent, although not quite as good as An American Werewolf in London.
The film hits just about all the right notes, although it suffers a bit from having its werewolves pull far too many impossible tricks of the sort usually performed by slasher movie villains. However, almost everything else about this film is perfect and every werewolf fan must see this.
