At first, this appears to be an undercover-journalists-finding-a-serial-killer movie, which turns out to be the set-up for the FX-heavy werewolf movie you're expecting. Kind of twist on the same plot device Wicker Man used.
I was shocked the same guy made Gremlins, but after watching them, you can tell the same ideas formed both movies.
