Review of The Howling (1981) by Gareth B — 07 Jun 2007
Not quite as good as American Werewolf, because it isn't as funny, but Joe Dante's The Howling is definately an intirguing piece. The idea of Werewolves not being limited to the moon is one which appeals to me greatly since it supports my analogy of werewolves being allegorical of psychotic disorders which can take hold at any time.
Also cleverly concieved is much of the make-up and prosthesis which is essentially the basis of all good lycanthrope films. And then of course there is the usual mix of sex, violence, confusion and terror which make the subgenre so popular.
My only real criticism comes with the film's conclusion where th effects seem so patched together that the character in question seems more like a dog than a werewolf. Other than that, I highly recommend The Howling as an excellent follow-on point from American Werewolf as is Dog Soldiers and Ginger snaps.
