Review of The House on Sorority Row (1982) by Steve J — 04 Sep 2013
This movie is slightly better than most of the horseshit this genre produces. Where I can scarcely sit through most of the so-called 'slasher' films of the 80s, this one livens things up just a tad with little touches of surrealism and a few decent directorial flourishes.
The first half of the film isn't half bad (considering), but the later part of the film, where moronic sorority girls wander off into the darkness so they can be picked off by a crazed murderer (a walking cane is the preferred weapon this time out), is frustratingly derivative.
It isn't scary at all, nor is it particularly suspenseful, but director Mark Rosman, a protege of de Palma, does his best with the fairly lifeless material. Bad acting, dated 80s fashions, and timeworn cliches abound.
Not really worth a watch unless you REALLY like lame 80s films that give the horror genre a bad (stupid) name.
