Review of The House of the Devil (2009) by Jay S — 27 Jul 2012
The House of the Devil is a terrifically suspenseful, fun, and scary throwback to the classic horror films of the 70's and 80's. In fact, it is so retro that it could have easily been found on a DVD shelf with lost slasher movies.
No phones, no ipods, feathered hairstyles, and some great 80's pop music are proof of how passionate director Ti West is about old horror movies. Its title might give the film's situation away, but the fun in The House of the Devil isn't in gory kills.
It's in watching our college girl in peril, Samantha (played naturally by Jocelin Donahue), walk around the house and stare into the darkness whenever she hears a strange noise. The audience, until the big "BANG!" finale, sits back and.
..waits. The movie is a ticking time bomb. You are so on edge for most of the movie, and the fact that we may already know what's going to happen to Samantha makes us just as scared for her. Ably supported by a good cast, including some awesome horror vets, The House of the Devil is a near-flawless fright flick that, along with his follow-up The Innkeepers, proves that Ti West is a force to be reckoned with in the horror genre.
