Review of The House of the Devil (2009) by Jack A — 28 Oct 2013
Gotta love director/screenwriter Ti West... His innovative film The House of the Devil took everything that made 80s horror classics such as The Evil Dead so great and combined it with several new tactics, making one potent horror movie.
What makes films like this so effective is that they place the emphasis not on the actual horror, but on the suspense, creating an experience that is sure to frighten just about anyone. This combined with a few jump scares here and there make for one of the best horror films I've seen in years.
The acting and direction, cinematography and script, are all well done. Bottom line, this may not be the scariest movie out there, but you'd be hard pressed to find a creepier one or one that gives you the chills more-so than this masterpiece.
I'd recommend it to any and all horror fans.
