Review of The House of the Devil (2009) by Shawn S — 21 Mar 2014
Similar to how I felt about Sinister, The House of the Devil does not introduce anything new in the horror genre, which is not always a bad thing. The horror elements slowly slip through the cracks, but get to the point when each one hits.
In this case, a young student named Sam finds a suspicious, but well-paying opportunity in babysitting (or actually, sitting the house owner's mother) in the said "House of the Devil." You can likely tell that something's wrong with this scenario, and in the end, the payoff is about as much as you would expect.
But the point is not to expect the unexpected. Building up to the ultimate horror can sometimes be the best part.
