Review of The House of the Devil (2009) by Brett W — 01 Jun 2010
House of the Devil is interesting enough, and something I'd even recommend to horror buffs. But unfortunately most of the uniqueness of this is due simply to the fact that it's such a careful recreation of horror pictures from the period; mid 70's-early 80's.
The lead actress is Margot Kidder's doppelganger and the pacing and setup are so reminiscent of Black Christmas you could be fooled into thinking certain scenes were lifted from it. Familiar though it be, it is still refreshing in it's simplicity and nostalgia.
College girl goes to haunted house...vincent price answers door...it's all very promising until about the hour mark when her aimless wanderings throughout the house are clearly leading nowhere. When the other shoe does drop it's executed so poorly that the title should have been "The People Who Live Next to the House of the Devil" since Satan is clearly not involved in this haunting.
