Review of The House of the Devil (2009) by Juan B — 05 Jun 2010
I watched this movie along with "Babysitter Wanted" and it's really curious how two movies with the same main story arc are so different. And although I thought that "The House Of the Devil" was a very promising movie on its early minutes, when the director, Ti West, and the crew are able to demonstrate a wonderful ability to create tense scenes with an amazing atmosphere, but... What's not to like of this movie? That the horror part comes too late, and when it comes, it's not such a big deal... I found the final twist surprising but hilarious though...
You can see that the movie is made with a lot of affection on each shot, with a lot of references to the classic horror movies. I loved everything about the credits, the atmosphere as I have said before, the costumes, everything was so well traited that every horror fan should find this irresistible.
Jocelin Donuhae as the main actress is just right, but really nothing spectacular.
To sum up, a slow but not boring at all horror movie, with that feeling of eighties so charming... Though the horror part is not as horrific as you may expect.
