Review of The House of the Devil (2009) by Brandon S — 05 Sep 2010
I was against watching The House of the Devil from the beginning, but we had friends over and the decision was not mine. From the start the movie looks like it is going to be a really low budget scare flick that wouldn't deliver the goods. It looks like it begins to pick up steam, but then the movie falls flat on its face leaving you wondering what the hell you were just watching for the last 90 minuets.
The movie is fun and creative, it has a "Grindhouse" type feel to it. Whoever was in charge of the props should really get an award or something. The movie looks like it was filmed in the 80's and I am pretty sure that its what the director was going for. The movie really delivers in the suspense and gore department too. The climax to the film has buckets and buckets of blood. So, it looks like I am giving this movie a lot of praise. I am not. The film's storyline is horrendous. You end up in a place and you dont know how you even got there. There are plot twists and lines that are thrown at you and you have no idea where they are coming from. This really drags the movie down and makes you want to turn it off.
I should probably tell you what the movie is about, right? Well the movie is set in the early to mid eighties. It centers around a young girl who is going through college and is babysitting on the side. She answers an ad and meets a satanic cult, hiding a demon in their house.
If you like movies about the 80's that are made in the late 00's then I think that you would be amused by this movie. If you want to watch a good horror movie then I think you should skip this one and rent "Amityville Horror" instead. The House of the Devil gets 4 out of 10.
"One thing leads to another".
S!D.
Filmed in Connecticut.
Filmed on 16mm film to give it that real "retro" style.
Promotional copies of the DVD were released in a clamshell case, similar to early VHS tapes in the 80's.
