Review of The House of the Devil (2009) by Amy D — 19 Sep 2010
I really, really wanted to like this. The opening was great with the throwback to the 70s and 80s films without mocking them. The characters develop over time and to the modern viewer this can seem really boring even though it heightens the suspense. But in the end it doesn't work.
You remember the "Seinfeld" episode where Jerry was making bootleg movies? Elaine wanted to see if she was as bad a dancer as everyone said, so she taped herself dancing over the end of one of Jerry's bootlegs. Jerry and Kramer view the film to find it suddenly cuts to Elaine dancing by herself. I felt like that with this movie--somebody recorded over the original ending with something totally random.
