Review of The House of the Devil (2009) by Melissa G — 29 Jun 2010
Oddly enough, this movie felt longer than 93 minutes. The best and worst part of this movie is that it was filmed in 2009 but looks and feels like 1980, the year it takes place. I highly enjoyed this film-making technique for the first 45-60 minutes and then it got boring.
The "suspense" wasn't killing me. The standard '80s cliche's were funny at first then got tiresome. There's the requisite dance sequence where something bad happens, the carefree best friend and don't forget those awesome high waisted jeans.
All of the action happens in the last 15-20 min. and the quite impossible ending leaves the movie open for an unnecessary sequel. This movie is not scary and I only quivered once. However, it was entertaining for a bit and fun for nostalgic reasons.
I'd love to watch it with a teenager of today's generation to see how it was before cellphones, ipods and low-rise jeans.
