Review of The Hours (2002) by Andreas C — 31 Aug 2008
I have a strong appreciation for movies that are well done, despite potentially "depressing" subject matter. Movies that are unorthodox. Great performances in this one, but this certainly isn't for everyone.
If a sad movie brings you down, then this one is not for you. But if you have any appreciation for good film craft, this a very good thing to see. Or perhaps more importantly, it's the story that's so interesting and the themes it brings up.
Like, how happiness is attained, and how people deal with things when they can't attain it. The people in this movie don't always make the "right" choices, but these types of choices are made all the time, and it's good to see them honestly presented.
Even these sad people have their happy moments, and that's what inspires hope. I'm interested in reading some of Woolf's work in the future, based on this movie.
