Review of The Hours (2002) by Bryan B — 06 Sep 2008
Well acted! beautifully done! I like how all the stories tie-in at the end.
And I also like how Nicole Kidman changed her face around.. barely looks like her up close. however when the camera backs up a bit you can tell it's her.
Anywayz.. we have 3 stories taking place. starting with Nicole's in the 1920's who is struggling with some sickness. she has had many thoughts of suicide and 2 attempts. she doesn't like where she is living and wants out. her husband is trying to do his best to take care of her and by moving out into a quiet location.. he fails to realize that she doesn't like being locked up like this and would rather be dead.
Off to 1950's where Julianne Moore is living a fairly good life with her husband(John C. Reily) and a son and another kid coming. however.. she is not completely happy. she starts having feelings for a woman. and doesn't really want a part of the family anymore so she takes a drastic measure to get what she wants. then later realizes she didn't really want what she did.
Meryl Streep now in 2001 is seemingly happy mother at first glance. however.. the love of her former bf is now slowly killing her cause he has no desire to live. Ed Harris plays this role magnificently! he's almost always a villain so this was a nice change for him. though he's far from the most likeable character in the movie.
I found this movie kinda depressing cause everyone here is depressed. all the 3 women fall for another women at some point in the movie. but it never leads anywhere.
I just found it to be a downer however the performances are just brilliant! and I really cared what happened to these people! so it's still worth your 2 hrs!
