Review of The Hours (2002) by Aaron L — 08 Jan 2009
This film is filled with more subtext, symbolism, and parallel structure than any film I have seen in a LONG time. It reminds me of so many great films made in the 40's and 50's that were shot artistically rather than for what the audience "wants to see".
The three main actresses give stellar performances. The stand-out performance in the film in my opinion however, was Ed Harris. His performance was brilliant and absolutely embodied his character. Claire Danes shows that her talent is laughable when it comes to acting.
Of course, it doesn't help when she is acting alongside such powerhouses as Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore. The film is shot very well and flows much like a book (obviously). The director also comes from a theatrical background and this is very apparent in the presentation of the film.
This film should be watched by any type of artist, they can learn a lot from many aspects of the film.
