Review of The Hours (2002) by Matt E — 15 Apr 2009
Great acting, average movie. Nicole Kidman delivers perhaps the greatest performance of her career as Virginia Woolf. You can't tell it's her thanks to a prosthetic nose and acting that rises to the level of total immersion.
The rest of the acting is also superb, especially from Jullienne Moore. Her character's tragic story doesn't need complete explanation, you see it on her face at the sunset of her life. Props are also due to Ed Harris and Meryl Streep, though they give their all to every movie.
The story is semi-incoherent, with some strokes of genius. The direction is very good, but the acting takes center stage here.
