Review of The Hours (2002) by Mike H — 11 Aug 2010
Stunning, excellently written, and, most surprising, well-acted. For once, Meryl Streep didn't pull-start her mouth full of lawnmower teeth and have a go at every piece of scenery in sight. For once, Toni Collette didn't bludgeon her role into senselessness. Even Julianne Moore, who I typically regard as medium, did well -- though really, it is Nicole Kidman, Meryl Steep, Ed Harris, and Nicole's husband character who do the most genuine acting.
But really, surprises aside, this was kind of a knock-out. If you missed it, and you're in the mood for drama, definitely give this one a chance.
