Review of The Hours (2002) by Ben K — 15 Dec 2010
An incredibly bleak and melancholy film, but with an ultimately uplifting message. It is made by its exceptional performances from all three leads: Kidman's portrayal of Virginia Woolf is bursting with emotion, Moore is full of control and subtlety, and Streep's performance feels so mature and effortless.
Also worth mentioning is great support from Ed Harris as a poet dying of AIDS and Toni Collette as a troubled 1950s housewife. Philip Glass's evocative score compliments the film perfectly, though it is sometimes overused.
Altogether, very accomplished and emotionally agonising.
