Review of The Hours (2002) by Sarah E — 24 Feb 2011
This is one of those movies that can and will break your heart in all the right ways. Ed Harris in particular gives a performance that isn't grandiose or larger than life. He's broken, he's fragile, and he's unhappy, like most of the characters in this movie, except that Harris normally plays men who are in control, so this is clearly a stretch for him.
If I may now load praise on the lead actresses in this film, I will say that they're all masters of restraint, images of perfection. They've fine tuned their craft here so elegantly that they can cry in absolute silence, they can feign pleasure and detachment.
They can kiss like they want to drink their beloved in. They needed to give out multiple acting awards for this film, because it's built on its performances. Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep, and Julianne Moore are perfectly imperfect in this movie, and that's a tragic and beautiful thing.
