Review of The Hours (2002) by Grace H — 15 Mar 2012
From the beginning of the movie to the end, a powerful sense of dread lingers throughout the whole piece. This dread is heightened by the chain of events that builds with gradually increasing rapidity to the climax, which passes quickly, but bears great significance.
The portrayals of Nicole Kidman as Virginia Woolf and Meryl Streep as Clarissa Vaughn are very nicely done. To be honest, although the film brings out the bare necessities of Michael Cunningham's book, the art and lyricism become casual everydayness.
As a whole, the film sews together a complex chain of events in the lives of 3 characters to make a whole story, one that is more based on one's perception and logic that the actual events themselves.
However, it does bring out the concept of the importance of life/death.
