Review of The Hours (2002) by Hassan I — 09 Jun 2012
Stephen Daldry's "The Hours" is an intriguing, intelligent, and thought-provoking film that raises questions about life. It is also a masterclass in acting and directing. Daldry directs this film using a brilliant script and engaging cinematography.
David Hare's script is deeply profound. It enhances this film, but also negatively affects it. The reason for this is the fact that this movie is very complicated and multi-layered. Nicole Kidman delivers an outstanding performance as Virginia Woolf.
She captures her character's personality so well, that this may be her best performance yet. Julianne Moore is astounding as Laura Brown. Moore exhibits electric screen presence due to her beauty and character development.
Meryl Streep is great as Clarissa Vaughn. Streep doesn't have much screen-time, but she does act well in several scenes. Philip Glass' score is rousing and even haunting. It matches the strange tone of this film perfectly.
"The Hours" is an amazing experience. David Hare's script doesn't fully explain the events in this film, but otherwise its highly worth watching. However, it won't appeal to just any viewer.
Recommended for serious movie-buffs.
