Review of The Hours (2002) by Autumn Y — 19 Dec 2009
I went into this movie not knowing what it was about nor having any real interest in seeing it. It was definitely time not wasted, however. Did anyone else take a minute to recognize Nicole Kidman? I sure did, and her performance was definitely not disappointing.
As someone who doesn't generally care for her roles, this was one I thought she was perfect for and she pulled it off elegantly and flawlessly. My only beef with it is the beginning feels a little choppy and confusing, and sometimes you are left going, "okay, come ON already," but maybe it's the suspense that makes the ending all the better.
(I love that they used Virginia's real suicide/last letter to her husband as the voice-over. It was beautiful.) A bit slow, and afterward you might be left trying to think, "Wait, what exactly was the movie about?" when trying to explain it to someone.
.. but in my opinion with life and with this film, it was definitely the journey, not the destination.
