Review of The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939) by Alison G — 21 Feb 2010
The first of the 14 film Rathbone/Bruce series, The Hound of the Baskervilles does not disappoint. The chemsitry that would typify the Holmes/Watson relationship is in its infancy as the actors seem slightly less comfortable with their roles than usual.
The sets are wonderfully atmospheric, especially the sinister moors and Grimpen Mire. The supporting cast are excellent, most notably the marvellous Lionel Atwill as Dr Mortimer, Richard Greene,John Carradine as Barryman the butler, Mary Gordon in her first of many performances as Mrs Hudson and the ubiquitous E.
E. Clive as a Cabby.
