Review of The Hottest State (2007) by Phil N — 05 Aug 2009
I like Ethan Hawke, think he's often overlooked for his work. With The Hottest State he steps behind the camera to direct from his own novel (although he take a small role too) and delivers a serious piece of navel-gazing.
The drama focuses on the William (Webber - reminiscent of a junior Sam Rockwell) who thinks he's found the love of his life in the shape of Sara (Moreno). He's intense, she's aloof and not ready to settle down.
.. it's all about the emotions of that first 'serious' relationship, and William also has to face up to some issues with his estranged Dad (Hawke). A little flabby in places, but features a great performance from Moreno and Hawke does a reasonable job for his directorial debut.
