Review of The Hot Spot (1990) by Timm S — 12 Jul 2015
Don Johnson plays Harry Madox who arrives in a small Texas town, immediately gets a job selling used cars, and plans to rob the local bank. Two women enter his life, Gloria Harper (Jennifer Connelly) who is the classic "all-American girl-next-door" type who works at the same car-lot as Harry and lives in fear of a low-life redneck played by William Sadler.
The other woman is Dolly Henshaw (Virginia Madsen) who is the trophy wife of Harry's boss and a classic femme fatale who wishes her husband was dead. Based on a 1952 novel by Charles Williams, this Neo-Noir was directed by Dennis Hopper.
Its plot is pretty basic but Hopper adds his usual Hopperlike moments combined with some over-the-top performances and an infectious Blues score, its worth a watch. Charles Martin Smith has a nice supporting role as Harry's fellow salesman and friend at the dealership.
