Review of The Host (2013) by Chinedu O — 14 Aug 2013
Despite some eye-rolling lines, I found myself enjoying "The Host" a lot more than I expected to. I'd started out with low expectations anyway, completely prepared to "shake-weight" through the whole 90 minutes.
However, this adaptation of Stephanie Meyers' body-snatching novel tells a fairly complex and really-not-that-cheesy story.... somehow managing to keep my interest despite the lack of big action set pieces.
The lead actress seemed to be a good fit, though the adequate supporting actors included three basically interchangeable Levi Strauss Model dudes, who either wanted to kill, bang, or marry her character.
Did I mention the novel was targeted at tween readers? Anyway I give "The Host" a grudging 2 (out of 5) stars for being unexpectedly deep and sucking far less than I thought it would.
