Review of The Host (2013) by Meghan H — 26 Dec 2013
The Host - at least the book - was an amazingly alive and raw book that captured the reader's emotions on every page, but the movie falls so flat it's not even funny. What made the book so amazing was the visceral reactions, the dramatic tensions between the characters and the constant climax in the plot.
The movie fails to develop the characters even halfway to the level they would need to be to pull this kind of a story off, and the almost-sort-of-there conflicts between the characters are so shallow and so brief that they just leave you confused and almost amused.
The movie uses brief moments of drama that aren't built up to whatsoever and so any dramatic moments the actors try to create just come off as bad acting. The romance between Wanda and Ian - which is the BEST part of the book - is barely even in the movie and non believable.
The movie left so many important parts of the story out, and changed so many things, that it's no wonder the movie is a flop. It's a shame, because The Host is by far the best book I've ever read.
