Review of The Host (2006) by Abid H — 26 Jun 2010
Genre piece from the immensely talented Bong Joon-ho, weaving an intricate web of social cinema, human drama and politics around the old monster movie concept. Bong has an extraordinary gift of creating characters with complex personalities, making them change during the course of the film and according to situation, resulting in a relativistic and very real understanding of human nature.
The Host sometimes seems overly nationalistic in it's critique of Western culture, but never in the semi-xenophobic, flag-waving style common in new commercial Chinese cinema. The former colonialists certainly get their share, but Bong also carefully dismisses his own society, with it's incompetent government officials and other Confucian father figures.
