Review of The Horse Soldiers (1959) by James D — 05 Jun 2007
Throughly engrossing and entertaining movie. Just enought action to move the plot along, but with pretty good character development. The action sequences deliver 100% and that is the main thrust of this movie.
The Confederacy is also portrayed in a simpathatic light. John Wayne is the perfect star for the Colonel. He shows that the Union is right, but that the Southerners are fighting for what they believe is a valiant cause.
In LTC Colonel Wayne's mind, he is not fighting horrible slave owning abomination. He is fighting an honorable enemy, who is mostly yeoman farmers and career soldiers. This film is still the only one who actually depicts that relation.
