Review of The Hook (1963) by Greg W — 30 Jul 2014
Dark war story set on an American ship transporting a North Korean prisoner. The crew hates the prisoner and wants to kill them, but films it much harder to kill in cold blood versus on the battlefield.
Kirk Douglas is terrific as a sear gent who tries to goat others into doing the killing that he won't do himself. I love Douglas in these types of roles where he plays a scumbag because he never makes his characters total dark hats (ALA "Ace in the Hole", but always manages to makes them somehow likable despite their actions.
Robert Walker Jr. and Nick Adams co-star as fellow sailors. It's not a great film, but Douglas is absolutely commanding an drakes this film well worth watching.
