Review of The Homesman (2014) by Juba M — 11 Nov 2017
You will never get back the 2 hours you spend watching this movie. You have been warned. Given the cast and reviews, I had at least average hopes for this movie. Blind dates have been less disappointing.
The cast does a stellar job with a bizarre plot and script but the editing and the directing leaves a lot to be desired. I was curious to see what a "feminist western" looked like but it was far more man-hating and endorsing the view of women as victims then feminist (and I say this as a feminist woman).
All of the men in the movie were truly awful human beings and women were continually portrayed as victims of "men's bad and selfish ways". Did Weinstein produce this movie? And the bizarre unexplained plot twist part way through the movie is not only untrue to who the characters have been thus far, but completely derails the movie.
Truly though NONE of the characters are fully developed or shown as a fully developed person. While that's to be expected in a pop culture movie where the storyline is primarily about the action, a quiet movie like this one should demonstrate some character development or exploration.
Truly horrible, bad, no good movie. Don't waste your time.
