Review of The Homesman (2014) by Sgt. C — 26 Nov 2014
Overlong road movie the precedes roads. Hilary Swank and Tommy Lee Jones take a journey in a mule train heading East. Whilst most classic Westerns concern a journey West, into the setting sun, this one goes East, back from the Wild West towards "civilisation".
An interesting premise, but sadly about as fast moving as the mule train in which our protagonists travel. There are only so many shots of two mules pulling a wagon across a prarie, but this film has them all.
The action is episodic, the main thread being the journey itself. Sometimes violent, sometimes shocking, but would have been better for being a fair bit shorter. Better than some, but not as good as it might be.
